Gold Contract
Task 31- Real World Problems- Modern day mining methods continue to cause the environmental problems that will affect generations to come, particualy in the Third World
Countries. How can we provent the wealth of the land being exploited with dire consequences?
I worked on this task with Sophie Woods.
Our world is being destroyed far to quickly than it should. The Aboriginals have roamed Australian soil for thousands of years without really harming the environment. Over the years of white settlement (which is really only 300 years) we have done more irresplaceable damage than the Aboriginals have over their thousands of years living here. We need to strive to learn the Aboriginal Australian's way of respecting the land and preserving it for future generations.
We can help future generations and Third World countries:
*Planting Vegetation
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycling
Avoid using large amounts of paper if possible
Using environmentally friendly electricity
*Install solar panels
*Find non-polluting transportation to get to school (walking, riding a bike, public transportation)
Gold Contract
Task 1- Abstraction- Freedom was the goal of the gold miners in Australia in the 1850s.
Research how miners lived to work out what they wanted frredom from. Prepare a report.
In my point of view i think miners would want freedom from-
1.The stress of having to pay yearly amounts of money for a Miners Liscense-
After the goverment declared that you have to have a Miners Liscense to dig or mine for gold, the population at the goldfields
decresed rapidly because the average amount of money earn't by a person with an odinary job was 1 pound ( 20 shillings ) a week,
and the Liscense costed 30 shillings a month. in fact, many men and women had to hide or leave the goldfields because
they could not pay the sum of money for a Miners Liscense.
2. Another reson is that the Europeans didn't always get along with the Chinease immagrints so they may have wanted a break from them
In the 1850s over 100,000 Chinease immagrints migrated to Austrlia as soon as they had heard about the gold that had been found there,
the Chinease were differnt in many ways, a few of them were- dress, lanuage, eating habits and religon. But the Chinease worked long hours,
and this mean't the Chinease often found Gold abandoned by European miners. This mean't they weren't very popular with the European diggers.
3.The miners would have wanted freedom from the harsh conditions at the goldfields The miners often described the goldfield as a ' graveyard ' and ' every man has a grave ' sort of thing. The goldfields were smelly, over populated, and not looked after very well.
4.The freedom from having basically a ' set ' daily routine The miners did not have the exact freedom in the day that they had expected. Basically the routine was- daily inspection of a miners license, walking out to the goldfields, digging through dirt and sending it through the machine, lunch break, more work, dinner and then bed. I know I would want a break from a routine like that.
5.Finally i think the miners would want freedom from the worry of being a fatherly figure As the news of Gold discovery spread round, and round the world, fathers left their families to go and mine, dig or pan for gold. But what they may not have known is that the mothers needed help more than anything in the world. Mothers were left to look after the children, as well as going to work, feeding the family and paying the bills. That must have been very stressful.
Gold Contract
Task 11- Lower Order Thinking skills, Knowledge
Write a diary entry about living on the Gold Fields.
Today was exacly like yesterday, the same long dreay hours in the mine,
and the same hope that we will be home soon with our Mrs. and kids. The
only part i really look forward to in the day is when we fellas sit around the
warmth of the blazing hot fire after a meal of cheap meat and bread sent from home
along with our letters. We fellas love reading about how our family members 'miss us'
and 'wish that we were here' and other things that makes lumps come to our throats and
tears start welling up in our eyes. The sad part about this whole journey i guess is seeing the
beautiful land and trees being destroyed due to Gold found and people wanting more, and more of it.
Dissapointing i guess,

Project / Research- go on to the class wiki and comment on HSIE folder- Why
is your Mum as valuable as Gold?
1.My Mum is as valuable as Gold because she is a one of a kind
2.My Mum means a LOT to me
3.My Mum is precious
4.I am thankful to have my Mum, like i would be thankful if i had Gold.
5.I would NOT trade my Mum
Gold Contract
Task 23 - Open Paradox, Gold is bad, describe why this statement is true.
Why Gold is Bad-
1. Gold is bad because it can drive people greedy and mad with power,
A person can forget what is really important like friends or family. The only thing on their mind is gold.
2. Gold can pollute the environment while digging and using big heavy machinery to get in and out of the Gold mines.
3. Gold can separate family for a long , long time, as Men and Women are separated from their families for a long time to mine for gold.
4. Crimes can be committed while Gold is valuable.
5. Digging for Gold is not good for your health, staying down in those deep dark mines for hours and hours can give you much more than
the flu.
Gold Contract
Task 27- Discovery, Choose a word that you have learned in this unit on " Gold! " Reasearch it's
meaning and origin using a dictionary and other sources. Find out as much as you can.
Present your findings in a dynamic way.
Panning- A broad shallow container of metal, usally having sides flaring towards the top, usually used in frying, baking washing, ect.
How does it relate to Gold?- Gold panning, The process is one of the simplest ways to extract gold, and is popular with miners because of its cheap cost and the relatively simple and easy process involved. It is the oldest method of mining gold.
History of panning- The first recorded usage of panning are from Ancient Rome, where gold and other precious metals were extracted from streams and mountainsides using panning.
How Panning helped miners and Gold diggers- Panning helped the miners by simply being the easiest process of finding gold, Insted of working long, tiring hours of finding gold in a deep and dark mine. Panning is an easy process that should be near a clean river in the sunshine.

1.What immediate thoughts come to mind when watching this clip?
My Immediate thoughts when watching this clip were that the children in the video wanted to be ENTHUSED and EXCITED about what they were
learning at school. 2. Think about your time as a student at school...How are you best engaged by your teacher?
I am best engaged by a teacher when it comes to research. My teacher ( Mrs Mckimm ) makes it fun by giving us freedom of creativity and when we are allowed to use any form of presentation that we like. 3. What could we be doing as a school to continue to engage you as a 21st century learner?
I would like it if we could be allowed to use any software that we like, for any project, as well as using computers. As well as using text books.
21st CENTURY TECHNOLOGY 1. Choose a technology that you can use very effectively.
A Radio 2. Describe the Technology
A radio can be described as a small portable electronic device, it has a knob to change the radio station that you are listening to and a VERY thin metal pole that is used as a satellite.
But a Radio is commonly found in a car. 3. What is it called?
A Radio 4. What does it allow you to do?
Listen to music, FM, any types that suits you, as well as listening to the news.AM. 5. How do you mostly use it?
I mostly use a radio to listen to music because i am not really fond of the news. 6. Could it be useful for your learning in the regular classroom? If so how...?
Yes it most certainly could, because if our teacher gives us freedom of choice for an information report a radio can come in handy for some topics.
